Three Lessons From WebMediaBrands's Acquisition of TVSpy


WebMediaBrands's acquisition of TVSpy came as sort of a surprise today. The economy may be in bad shape, but Alan Meckler is amassing quite a stable of media-oriented blogs. From eMediaVitals:


The great recession notwithstanding, Alan Meckler, the chairman and CEO of WebMediaBrands and an avid Tweeter, has been busy buying up potentially valuable blog properties in the past year. In October, WebMediaBrands acquired the blog 10000 Words, which attracts more than 3 million unique viewers monthly (many of whom are media types), for its Mediabistro blog network.
Today Meckler announced via Twitter that WebMediaBrands is acquiring TVSpy from Vault, Inc. "TVSpy and its predecessor ShopTalk have been the go-to source for coverage of local television news and job moves for more than two decades," Meckler said in apress release. "TVSpy fits perfectly into our Mediabistro blog network, which includes TVNewser, the must-read site for coverage of network news. The combination of TVSpy and TVNewser should further ensure our leadership in coverage of local and national broadcast and cable news on air and online."
Mediabistro has built a name for itself as a lean organization that generally covers media industry news and gossip with integrity and -- rare -- no snark. TVSpy does appear to be a good organic fit with TVNewser, Mediabistro's flagship site. Here are three quick lessons from the TVSpy acquisition ...
